READ with Comments… Deep Appreciation for the Text as Literature! Vs. 14 – Contrast this to vs. 13… “Spirit of the LORD came upon David! --- Disturbing text, “Evil spirit from the LORD terrorized saul.” “Troubling” spirit…. Tormented, troubled, disturbed Remember Saul’s Stubborn Disobedience o Under Strong Conviction… Refused to Repent! o Psychological, not Spiritual solution! Vs. 16 – Music soothes the savage beast…. Emotional problem alone! Vs. 18 Politics – An odd, “OVER-Nomination”… more than music! Personality – David was a Extraordinary person! Providence – The LORD is with Him! Vs. 19 – How did Saul know his Name? With the Flock? • Was he already aware of David? Well-known? Anointing?! Vs. 22 – Surely Saul had no idea of David’s Anointing as King? • David gains access, position (Personal Assistant) in Royal circles, Experience at the Court! Vs. 23 – David == Shepherd; Warrior (17); MUSICIAN • Man after God’s Own Heart == A Man of Praise, Worship • Read some of his work… Psalms (John 4) TRUTH = God Will Accomplish His Purposes. “Providence” = God’s work of preserving and guiding all of creation to His intended purposes. “Provide” == To see in advance and plan for Vs. 17 – A subtle play of words… “David is Provided” • Vs. 1 – “I have selected (provided) a king for myself • Hebrew, like English word, based on root for vision/ “see” --- “See to it” “work it all out and make sure it happens” ILL – Providence = The Hand behind the Headlines. ILL – The longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth, That God governs in the affairs of man. --- Benjamin Franklin A) Providence in Saul’s Fall from Power (14a) B) Providence in David’s Rise to Power (18b) God’s hand cannot always be seen --- ILL – Life must be lived forward, it can only be understood Backwards. Soren Kierkegaard God will accomplish His Purposes in Our Lives! |
