Galatians 4: 1-6 (Take Your Time…Cross)

Vs. 1 – Contrast before & after Jesus… Slave and Heir…
Vs. 3 – “Elemental things of the world”
--- Twisted way the world relates to God
(manipulate, control, appease, overthrow)
Vs. 4 – “But…God” == His Work of Grace
Jesus = fully divine, fully human
Vs. 6 – Notice Trinity

Borrowed Word that speaks to the very nature of our relationship with God --- essential… Abba

Thesis: We Call God, “Dear Father.”

Abba – The simple speech of a child to her/his father. (household)
An Aramaic Word, term of endearment, retained by
The gentile Churches…. Why?

• Jesus used it (Mark 14) prayer in the garden.
---We Call God what Jesus called Him.
Vs. 6 – “Spirit of His Son within…”
• Jesus instructed Dsiciples’ to use it.
Contrasted to “Abinu” more formal to be used in worship.
• Paul retained It…. Romans 8

We Call God, “Dear Father”…. Abba…Dad

A Family Word…. Language of the Heart… (vs. 6)
“Crying” = kradzon… to croak like a raven
Holy Spirit within testifies

As Children, We Live with Confidence
Exp – The text contrasts Sons with Slaves.
“Heir” – Focused here not on future inheritance but present
Status….
• Not status earned or Taken, but “Received” (vs. 5)
Adoption – To Place as a Son… A Status Given! (Grace)
Liberty, Honesty, Intimacy, Humility

T/S – This Confidence, Casual Approach to Dear Father will
Produce Lax, Careless, immoral lifestyle… too much Freedom

As Children, We Live with Loyalty

We behave, serve, life out of loyal love for our Father.
