 Pursuing Honor, not Happiness!

Today, OBEDIENCE

t/s – Preacher, you know how to manage the crowds…flock to hear!
• Obedience is not very glamorous, but it is as essential as lumber, gravel and cement. We would do well to understand and embrace the role Obedience plays in our Families.

ILL – “Mother May I?” “Yes you May.” “No you May not”
• Take two steps; 11 baby steps; four giant steps,…
• Way to win…. Obey….

In Family Life, We Learn Obedience
“Obey” not used often in Proverbs
One Key Word connected to Obedience Used 29 times…. almost every chapter… 1,160 times in OT…first word of our text today..

• Biblical Worldview – To Hear, Listen, Obey…
 An effective Hearing (Opposite of “Forsake”)

Obedience… Context of Family Relationships (Father & Mother)
In Family Life, We Learn Obedience. (Assumed in Bible)
In Family Life, We Learn to Live Under Authority.

In recent generations we have moved away from an emphasis on Learning Obedience at Home.

We need to discover anew this Basic Raw Material of Family Life.
In Family Life, We Learn to Live Under Authority.

Authority = The Rightful exercise of power or control.
--- combines power and legitimacy.
• Authoritarianism = compensation of weakness through bluff, bluster, stifles freedom.

• Authority = healthy expression of strength…free following.

• Learning Obedience at Home helps us know the True Expression of Authority.


Learning Obedience at Home blesses us (social, personal, spiritual)

Social = It’s WE, not just ME.
• Developing self-control
ILL – OK Arts Institute Orchestra… talented, gifted…
…willing to play Under the Authority of conductor

Personal = Authority Is Reality in Life
• Learning to beauty of submission… Trust & Obey.

ILL – Little boy, 10 years old, manipulated and rebel with threat,
“I will take all my clothes off”….
• Wise old Dentist, “Go right Ahead”
• Walked through waiting room without his clothes.

Sooner or later, we Learn Obedience. It is better to Learn at Home.
Conclusion

“Hear” = Connected to the 10 Commandments in Deuteronomy.
 Honor your Father and Mother
 Paul, “the first commandment with a promise”
--- “That It may go well with you!”
